All Things New: Living in the ‘Now and Not Yet’

Jesus says in Revelation 21, “Behold, I am making all things new,” yet worldly troubles still bring anxiety and distress.

He reassures us in John 16, “Take heart, I have overcome the world.”

John explains that “the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3), while St. Paul declares “you have been set free from sin” (Romans 6).

These promises flow from Christ’s complete work —his life, death, resurrection, and ascension — accomplished for you.

Christ has vanquished the old enemies of sin, death, and the devil through his sacrifice and triumph.

This victory is yours now and forever.

Yet these foes — the devil, the world, and our sinful nature — continue to disrupt our lives and relationships.

This tension defines our Christian journey: living in the “now and not yet.”

The gifts of Christ are presently yours, like wrapped presents beneath a Christmas tree, though not fully realized or comprehended in this life.

But a day approaches when Satan and his forces will be forever confined to hell, never again to tempt believers.

This world will undergo fiery refinement, and paradise — heaven itself — will be restored on earth.

Your mortal flesh will give way to an immortal, incorruptible, and perfect body.

Throughout eternity, you will experience the fullness of God’s promise in Christ Jesus, when truly all things will be made new.
