Being baptized is no small thing — it marks us as children of God who have exchanged filthy rags for Christ’s Righteousness.
This new identity brings confidence where it matters most: before our Heavenly Father.
As St. Paul writes in Romans 8, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
If God sent His Son to die for you, He will surely do everything to keep you.
Nothing in this world can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus.
We Lutherans express this confidence beautifully in our hymns.
As hymn 666 declares: “A little flock. Fear not the foe who madly seeks your overthrow; dread not his rage and power, and know your courage sometimes faints; his seeming triumph o’er God’s saints lasts but a little hour.”
Life brings tribulation such as struggles with sin, sickness, sadness, and death.
The devil constantly tries to separate us from our loving God.
Yet through Christ’s cross, victory has been won.
In baptism, we become a new creation, sharing in that triumph.
This is why our prayers often seek deliverance and protection. Even in the Lord’s Prayer, we pray “deliver us from evil”—from the evil one.
Our confidence rests in God’s true Word: “Not earth nor hell’s satanic crew against us shall prevail.”
Though we may face trials, “God is with us and we with God. Our victory cannot fail.”
We join the prayer: “Amen. Lord Jesus, grant our prayer. Great Captain, now Thine arm make bare; fight for us once again! So shall Thy saints and martyrs raise a mighty chorus to Thy praise forevermore. Amen.”
