Psalm 29: Breaking Cedars and Bringing Peace

❓What do we notice in Psalm 29? 🤔

First, the word “ascribe.” 📝

The word ascribe means “to give.”

In this context, it means to praise God, give to Him glory 🙌 and worship 🛐 because He is holy.

When you see “LORD” in the Old Testament, that is a placeholder for God’s name, Yahweh. So you read this as:

“Give to Yahweh, O heavenly beings…” ✨

God is the God of all creation 🌍
And through Jesus Christ, He has saved us! ✝️

When we look at the rest of this psalm, we see examples of God’s power 💪:

💥 The voice of Yahweh breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
🌊 God’s voice is powerful.
⚡ His voice thunders.
👑 He is full of majesty.

Verse 9: Different Translations
In verse 9, you might notice different translations:

ESV: “The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth.” 🦌
NIV: “The voice of the Lord twists the oaks.” 🌳

Why the difference? 🤷‍♂️

Just like in English, there are certain words that depend on the context to interpret them. This is what’s happening here. Different translators make different decisions about how to interpret the Hebrew.

But either way, it works because it either emphasizes the power of God’s voice 🗣️ or highlights His power to bring life 🌱.

Confidence in God’s Power ✨

When we read this psalm, we gain confidence that God is powerful over all things. 💪💨

Yet, the psalm ends with this…

“May Yahweh give strength to his people. 💕
May Yahweh bless his people with peace.” 🕊️

So this God, who is all-powerful — whose voice shakes the oaks 🌳 and strips forests bare 🌪️ — is also the One who brings life. 🌟

We Gather in His Name

We gather in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — in that powerful name — to hear His word 📖 and receive His gifts. 🎁
